Penetrating Damp
We all know what the Brithish weather is famous for. Homes in the UK have a tough time keeping it out. If you think you may have any problems with dampness in your walls internally or externally or maybe you have a number of bricks on external walls that are spalling ( the face of the brick crumbling) or you can see mortar missing or falling out of the brick joints.
I will try to give you some insight to the problems.
Penertrating damp in a wall is usually from a source such as wind driven rain causing moisture to enter the structure in a horizontal direction. Gravity may cause the downward movement of the dampness having an effect that the damp is entering at a lower point than the actual problem. (Penetrating damp should not be confused with lateral damp.)
Penetrating damp may be from a number of sources, deffective brickwork or faulty pointing rain water goods deffective flashings. Penetraing damp has been proven to be responsible for a high percentage of dry rot attacks in buildings. Penetrating damp can create isolated patches of dampness that increase in size after periods of heavy rain and can dissapear in long dry spells of weather, if the problem is visible internally plaster work appears cracked and blown or wall paper or paint can appear loose or flakey, mildew and black spot mold may appear sometimes the dampness may not be visible as the water is absorbed into timbers maybe structural which will act like a sponge.
Our aim is to first determen the cause of the problem before treating it. As with all building deffectes prevention is an important consideration if problems can be addresed at an early stage the cost and the damage can be reduced, if repair work is needed we will then consider the method and the materials to be used taking into account the age of the property and the bricks and mortar used.
