Has you can see in the gallery photos, brickwork that is constantly wet due to poor pointing
or no mortar in the joints, will eventualy result in serious damage to the bricks
Heat loss through brickwork is one and a half times greater when saturated as opposed to dry.
constantly saturated brickwork will result in Dampness internaly , resulting in more expense
and may cause damage to existing cavity wall ties through corrosion, especial in earlyer properties
where the ties used may have been of poor qaulity

RS BRICKWORK ,as been trading for a number of years
and with over 25 years experience in the Building industry, we can assure all are customers old and new,

The work we carry out will be done according to the customers requirements, and with the customers approval at all times , any size of contract small or large
it could be a damp area of 1 meter sqaure, in a private home, to a complete listed building renovation,

                      Penetrating Damp

We all know what the Brithish weather is famous for. Homes in the UK have a tough time keeping it out. If you think you may have any problems with dampness in your walls internally or externally or maybe you have a number of bricks on external walls that are spalling ( the face of the brick crumbling) or you can see mortar missing or falling out of the brick joints.

I will try to give you some insight to the problems.
Penertrating damp in a wall is usually from a source such as wind driven rain causing moisture to enter the structure in a horizontal direction. Gravity may cause the downward movement of the dampness having an effect that the damp is entering at a lower point than the actual problem. (Penetrating damp should not be confused with lateral damp.)

Penetrating damp may be from a number of sources, deffective brickwork or faulty pointing rain water goods deffective flashings. Penetraing damp has been proven to be responsible for a high percentage of dry rot attacks in buildings. Penetrating damp can create isolated patches of dampness that increase in size after periods of heavy rain and can dissapear in long dry spells of weather, if the problem is visible internally plaster work appears cracked and blown or wall paper or paint can appear loose or flakey, mildew and black spot mold may appear sometimes the dampness may not be visible as the water is absorbed into timbers maybe structural which will act like a sponge.

Our aim is to first determen the cause of the problem before treating it. As with all building deffectes prevention is an important consideration if problems can be addresed at an early stage the cost and the damage can be reduced, if repair work is needed we will then consider the method and the materials to be used taking into account the age of the property and the bricks and mortar used.

                         Repointing

When reponiting we follow and adhere to some important well known practises a very important and well known rule in the bricklaying world is mortar should never be stronger than the bricks in this context stronger does not mean it's load bearing capacity, but the mortars hardness and permeability hard dense mortar should not be used to surround porus bricks in such brick work rain water wets the bricks but the impervious mortar stops the water  diffusing and prevents brick work drying out freely idealy both the brickwork and the mortar should have a similar porosity.

With our experience in the craft we consider a number of methods and materials which will most suit the property and the position of the proposed brickwork for repointing. Is it exposed to severe weather conditions, is the structure prone to settlement or other movement.

At RS brickwork we are fully aware of the need of using the right mortar mix for different conditions and situations and have experience in the needs for using lime mortars   where most suitable ,and a more durable mortar in conditions of severe weathering and saturation.

If the brick work has become excessively porus and is constantly exposed to severe weathering we do only suggest this as a final solution we will consider using a clear microporus coating wich means it is breathable thus allowing the brickwork to breathe.

We at RS brickwork are proud of our reputation by using the right materials and methods repointing when carried out correctly will be long lasting and prevent further deteriation and damage.
